In our world, in the past--there were human classes, too. And the people at the bottom... were considered impure, or unclean. Because of where they lived, and what they did. Like the people who worked with death. The other humans--a lot of them hated those people, and treated them really badly. [It's not something he has a personal understanding of, but it would be impossible for him not to know about it.]
