Sucks, doesn't it. Even when it's doing arguably "nice" things and giving us coffee shops.

It draws so heavily on other people’s memories, would it just be empty if there wasn’t anyone here for it to draw from?

Maybe... do you think that's why it looked like that, when we first arrived?

Black and white and kinda empty? Maybe... maybe it was memories from people who'd been here before and they'd got to ruin?

Or memories from the residents, and where they'd forgotten themselves...?

I was thinking more... because the residents kept to other places, maybe. Their own archways, or the places that we couldn't get to in the earlier weeks. If they abandoned the areas like the carnival and the shrine, then maybe that's why they ended up like that.

[But Crow certainly has a point too; Yasusada's just throwing out ideas.]

Maybe a little of both. It takes a number of factors for somewhere to become abandoned like that.
